Ever wondered what to do in an accident or medical emergency? Most people just do not know what to do or how to respond in those situations, and rely solely on the emergency medical services (EMS). What people do not realize is that it takes time for the EMS (ambulance, etc.) to arrive at the scene. In many cases, the victims died before the ambulance arrived. If the person who found the victim has training in EFR (Emergency First Response - CPR and First Aid), within those precious first few minutes he/she can start badly needed primary care on the victim which may mean the difference between life or death. The EFR course is available and beneficial to everybody, not just divers...you never know when you will need to respond to an emergency situation! The Emergency First Response (EFR) course is a combination of the CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and First Aid course. It teaches participants how to provide care with confidence during a medical emergency situation. Students learn and practice the same emergency care techniques and principles as used by trained medical professionals, but structured in a better way to promote easier understanding (so that anybody at any age can learn) and easier to recall (during an actual emergency scenario, when you need to apply what you have learnt).
1. CPR
This component of the EFR course teaches participants how to respond to life-threatening emergencies e.g. a stroke victim or a child choking on food. The course focuses on primary care through a combination of Knowledge Development sessions (by reading the EFR manual and watching the EFR DVD), skill development and realistic scenario practice (in a team) to make sure participants have the confidence in their ability to provide care when emergency situations arise. Primary Care (CPR) skills taught in this course include:
* Scene Safety Assessment * Universal Precautions - Communicable Disease Protection, including barrier use * Primary Assessment * Rescue Breathing * Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) * Conscious and Unconscious Obstructed Airway Management (choking victim) * Serious Bleeding Management * Shock Management * Spinal Injury Management * Recommended Skills * Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training
The EFR DVD used during the course is very effective in reinforcing what students learn from the manual and is available for purchase.

2. FIRST AID
Emergency First Aid (Secondary Care) covers injuries or illnesses that are not immediately life threatening. Participants focus on secondary assessment and first aid through Knowledge Development (again by reading through the EFR Manual and watching the DVD), skill development and realistic scenario practice. Skills taught in this course include:
* Injury Assessment * Illness Assessment * Bandaging * Splinting for Dislocations and Fractures The excellent EFR Manual also gives very useful references to:
Allergic Reactions, Bruises, Burns, Chemical Burns, CPR (adult, child, infant) Choking (adult and infant), Cone Shell Stings, Coral, Jellyfish and Hydroid Stings, Cuts, Dental Injuries, Diabetic Problems, Dislocations and Fractures, Electrical Injuries, Eye Injuries, First Aid Kit Assembly, Fish Spine Injury, Frostbite, Heat Exhaustion, Heatstroke, Heart Attack, Hypothermia, Illness Assessment, Injury Assessment, Insect Stings, Octopus Bites, Poisoning, Rescue Breathing (adult, child, infant) Scrapes, Seizures, Snake Bites, Spider Bites, Sprains and Strains, Stroke, Temperature Related Injuries, Venomous Bites and Stings, and Illness Assessment Record Sheet.
The EFR Manual is provided to every student during the course.
Finally, you never know when you will need to use these skills so sign up today for the EFR course! The course is run all year round and can be conducted on request or at the students' location (office, workplace etc.). Please call us for more details. The course is currently priced at RM400 and takes no more than a few hours to complete.
