The PADI Enriched Air Nitrox (also abbreviated as EANx or just Nitrox) course is designed to qualify you to use enriched air (nitrox) for no-stop recreational diving. The course deals with the use of enriched air with 22% to 40% oxygen, with emphasis on nitrox blend with 32% and 36% oxygen.

The primary purpose of using nitrox is to extend your no decompression limits beyond what you can get when using normal air for your dives.

Analyzing EANx tanks

Analyzing the Oxygen content of a nitrox tank, one of the practical applications
that students will perform during this course

This course is highly flexible and aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • To enable you to plan and make no decompression dives using primarily enriched air nitrox blends containing 22% to 40% oxygen, remaining within accepted dive table and oxygen exposure limits.
  • To enable you to obtain and care for scuba equipment used in enriched air diving.
  • To enable you to manage and avoid possible enriched air hazards.
  • To enable you to use and apply the benefits of enriched air for your recreational diving.

The course comprises of:

  • Only two (2) knowledge development chapters from the PADI Enrched Air Diver Manual.
  • Only two (2) practical application sessions (includes analyzing nitrox tank content, filling up logs, etc.)
  • 1 final exam

Dives with nitrox is only optional and at small extra cost to the students.

What is Enriched Air Nitrox?

Air consists of approximately 79% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen. Enriched air, as the name implies, is air that has been enriched with oxygen, so it contains more than 21% Oxygen. Therefore, enriched air is any Nitrogen/Oxygen gas blend with more than 21% Oxygen.

Enriched Air Nitrox is abbreviated EANx, followed by the percent of its oxygen content. For example, EANx36 is 36% Oxygen, and a remainder of 64% Nitrogen. You would refer this as “EANx36,”“Enriched Air 36,”“Enriched Air Nitrox 36”or “Nitrox 36.”

Course Duration: 1 day. Dives with nitrox is not required for certification (optional) but highly recommended.
