Ocean Elements organized an underwater cleanup event as part of the celebration of “Earth Day 2010” from 24 – 26 April 2009 at Tenggol Island, Terengganu. This is the third year we organized such an event at Tenggol and this year’s event was attended by 20 divers.

During that event, more than 80kg of rubbish comprising mostly of tin cans, plastic and metal parts and fishing lines and nets were removed from the Teluk Air Tawar bay area. In addition, in three dive sites where too many Crown-of-Thorn flourished, experienced divers in the group removed a total of 150 of the animals from the reef.

An underwater picture taken of a diver with a net full of Crown-of-Thorn graced the front cover of the WOW! pullout section of Utusan Malaysia on 8 May 2010. And once again, millions of thanks go to Utusan Editor, Mr Amir Sarifudin who took part in this event.

More importantly, during this event, a meeting was held between Ocean Elements, Terengganu State Committee Chairman for Tourism, Cultural and Heritage, the local dive operator Discovery Divers, the Head of the Dungun District Council and representatives from the local Fishermen Association to discus on the problem of rubbish being dumped into the bay by the local fishermen and how this issue could be tackled.
